It’s ironic that one of the places single-use plastic turns up most is at grocery stores — the place we buy food to nourish ourselves. Even Whole Foods — all those plastic bags to put produce in. All those plastic containers that produce is already in. Frozen fruits and vegetables — all packed in plastic. I was able to find these (see photo) in Whole Foods as well — so now, when I shop, I have mesh bags to put produce in. And reusable grocery bags from Whole Foods and Trader Joes to be kept in my car to put the groceries in after checkout. In avoiding single-use plastic, I am consciously choosing how to nourish myself and simultaneously paying attention to the relationship between my nourishment and the care of the planet — cleaning up my ecosystem if you will — that’s the essence of environmental vitality.
