So I did it. Phase 1 complete. The last Monday of my Stand Up class concluded on February 11 with a wonderful class performance. I have to say that I was extremely impressed with how the entire class performed. Everyone had very interesting, tight sets and it was really interesting to see how my classmates chiseled their sets and tightened up parts of their routine that they’d been working on in class. For the most part, a class like this, you get out of it, what you decide to put in, but I do think the performances of myself and classmates was a testament to the instructor and how she structured the class. It was never high pressure. It recognized how stressful this type of performance can be for a first timer and emphasized the “Art form” and invited people to participate. I think I counted 4 individuals that didn’t show up to the last class. I guess my point was, no matter what, it was okay and it was a good thing to just try it.
But enough about everyone else; let’s talk about me. Wow. So grateful to have the support of friends and family in the audience. And I felt that it was definitely a successful taste for me. Lots of areas to improve, but what a great new rush. And bless the MC, I totally went longer than 5 minutes. So that’s one thing to watch out for!
You can decide for yourself:
So now with this initial step over, what’s next for me is to explore the connections made in the class and to continue working on writing material and going out to open mics. I’m looking forward to the next part of the journey. The first phase was predictable to a degree and now it’s independent study. I’m going to have to make sure that I create time to continue working and growing in this art form. I’ll keep you updated.
